Energy Industry Cluster
Energy fuels Texas’ economy. In 2006, the Texas energy industry employed more than 375,000 people, who earned $35 billion in wages. Texas produces more energy than any other state in the nation. It leads all states in crude oil and natural gas production, accounting for 23 percent and 28 percent of total U.S. capacity, respectively. Texas has 25 oil refineries that have a refining capacity of 4.7 million barrels of oil per day, approximately one quarter of all U.S. refining capacity.
Texas is in a leadership position in this cluster because of the well-established energy sector and infrastructure in the state. The greatest upside potential in this cluster may well be the development of new technologies in the traditional sectors (oil and gas exploration) in conjunction with the development of new energy sources and the technologies to exploit them (hydrogen, wind, biomass, etc.). This cluster incldues the energy distribution and marketing industry. Learn more about this cluster on the Texas Wide Open for Business Web site >
