Advanced Technology and Manufacturing Industry Cluster
“Advanced” manufacturing requires higher skills and thus results in higher wages and investment in the state. Texas offers advanced technology and manufacturing businesses opportunities throughout the state. The Advanced Technology & Manufacturing cluster consists of three subclusters: nanotechnology, semiconductors and automotive manufacturing.
Nanotechnology – The engineering of tiny particles means a huge boost to Texas’ economy. This relatively new science is set to revolutionize business and industries across the board.
Semiconductors – Texas lead the way in the development of the integrated circuit with pioneers such as Jack Kilby. The state has since been a leader in the industry since the mid 20th Century. Texas accounts for 11.5 percent of the world’s silicon processing capacity, according to the University of Texas at Austin’s IC2 Institute. Major Texas semiconductor employers include Samsung, Texas Instruments, Raytheon, Freescale Semiconductor, Advanced Micro Devices, and Applied Materials. Texas is home to one of the world’s top five chip makers (Texas Instruments) and one of the semiconductor industry’s leading research consortiums (SEMATECH).
Automotive Manufacturing – The state’s involvement with the automotive industry spans more than half a century. In 2004, General Motors in Arlington celebrated 50 years of manufacturing. Still growing strong, Toyota’s sixth North American plant, a new truck assembly facility in San Antonio opened in 2006. Texas is No. 1 when it comes to loving their pickup trucks. The state the single-largest market for full-sized pickups.
