From Comptroller Susan Combs

Work force is a major driver for economic development and a critical issue for local governments. Texas economic development leaders are continually looking for ways to attract new industry and provide high-paying jobs for their citizens. Public-private partnerships and job-training initiatives can help Texas local governments train the highly skilled workers needed to compete in our increasingly global marketplace.
As your strategic partner for local government management, the Comptroller’s office is pleased to present this issue of Texas Rising, which offers a wealth of resources and tips on developing and training your community’s work force.
In this issue, we show you how the Rio South Texas region has transformed into one of the nation’s fastest-growing economic areas. The seven-county area stretching from Laredo to Brownsville has added nearly 50,000 jobs over the past five years. Leading this growth is the North American Advanced Manufacturing Research and Education Initiative (NAAMREI), a wonderful collaboration between partners in business, education, economic development, finance and government devoted to developing a world-class advanced manufacturing industry in the valley.
We spotlight how this partnership helped secure the area’s new Rapid Response Manufacturing Center, a leading-edge facility designed to dramatically reduce the time it takes to develop and bring products to market. We share advice from the government, business and academic leaders behind the center on how to collaborate for economic development in your community. We also offer state and federal resources for job-training funding.
When it comes to economic development, creating jobs and generating new levels of prosperity, local governments in Texas are focused on rising to the occasion every time.
