Texas posted the highest over-the-year employment growth in the nation in January 2008. The Midland area experienced the lowest unemployment rate in the state at 2.9 percent. The number of sales tax permits issued each month can be an indicator of new business and economic growth. Permits issued in the state in February 2008 were up 5 percent from February 2006.
